Many illustrators want to get quality giclee prints of their artwork made for a reasonable amount of money. I thought I would share the place I use with you.

If you do not have a scanner to make a high quality digital reproductions you can also send your artwork directly to Marty and he will take care of this for you. I always just send him my prints as an attachment. There is no need to send him your image in a .tif file (that would never go through, unless you zipped it), just send him a high resolution (at least 300 dpi).jpg. Note: If you regularly send large MB files, you can get a hotmail account that will let you do this for $20 a year.

You can find my bio on the home page of this site. I have always been an artist. A number of years ago, life stepped in the way - I had to work and support family, so I did not have much time to advance my career in art. Now life still tries to get in the way, but I keep jumping over those obstacles to get to my artistic side. When the computer became a household item, I began scanning in my art into the computer and went back to college to take classes on web design. The only thought in my mind was that I wanted to design a website where I could show off my art. Little did I know that I would start a web design company. I guess it was around the same time that I purchased Photoshop and Illustrator. I was immediately taken with the new painting abilities Photoshop provided and couldn't stay away. I took courses and started to realize that the very slick illustrations in magazines were all touched up using one of these new software programs, so I started playing around with the art I had scanned into my computer. Wow! This opened all kinds of possibilities and provided me a way to send out print ready artwork. Later I added as Wacom Tablet, so I could draw directly into the computer. The next software that I would like to master is Corel Painter, but in the meantime I teach Photoshop to adults at the local Adult School and give an on-line Photoshop course. Sometimes I order the free postcards from Vista Print and I think everyone should take advantage of Vista Print's tri-fold broucures when they are on sale. You only get a few, but if you order them each time they are on sale, you will be able to build up your inventory.

Avoid making the artist rsum complicated. It is meant to be short and simple to review. Galleries may receive dozens of applications per week so you will want to make it easy on the eye. Select fonts and font sizes that facilitate reading. Use the white spaces well. Do not submit your artist rsum on a computer disk or CD-ROM unless it is specified.

Comments: If a gallery gives you a show or takes you in as a stable artist, they may eliminate much of the information in this category. They will probably remove your address, phone numbers, etc., and provide your date or place of birth. This is a common practice because the gallery wants the potential buyer to contact them directly regarding any inquiries about your work.

2. Education

Comments: List all of the academic degrees you have earned (noting honors). It is not uncommon to have studied art at a university without completing the degree. You may want to list these periods of study after the list of degrees earned.

3. Grants/Awards (Grants/Fellowships, Awards/Honors, etc.)

4. Solo Exhibitions (One-Person Shows, Solo Shows, etc.)

Comments: As your career progresses it is likely that you will use the heading "Selected Solo Exhibitions."

For artists in certain time-based media an exhibition might be referred to as a "Screening." In that case, the heading might read "Exhibitions/Screenings" or "Exhibitions/Screenings/Performances" instead of "Exhibition Record." For performance artists the heading "Performances" may be adequate. Others may require the heading "Exhibitions/Commissions."

For those doing digital or technological art as well as video or performance art, please note whether or not the work is collaborative. If it is, develop a simple method for identifying individual contributions.

Comments: In the case of private collectors, be sure to have permission to list their name(s). Some private collectors like to keep a low profile because of security reasons.

8. Bibliography (Selected Bibliography)

The inclusion of your work in books, magazines, major newspapers, and important catalogues is important for major galleries. Exhibition announcements and reviews in newspapers of smaller communities are less important.

9. Current Employment

Comments: It is not necessary to list your entire employment history. In the case of an individual who has taught at several major art institutions it may be useful.

For those that are sometimes fearful of the uncertainty, unpredictability and free-flowing nature of using watercolors, here is something you could try. First, paint your paper with gesso and let it dry. This will keep your watercolors on top of the surface and not let the paper fibers absorb the paint. If you make a mistake or are not fully satisfied with the results, you can take a wet cloth and remove the parts you do not like. The other thing you can experiment with is the way you apply the gesso. Texture can be created by apply it with a palette knife and give you a different look. Something to try when you want to step out of the box.

The Birth of Color

THE BIRTH OF COLOR

We are all familiar with the art left behind by early man. These left-behind treasures whisper their world to us. The earth provided clay, which they molded and stone and bones, which they carved. Then they discovered the materials around them could make color. If you look around, today, you will see the same colors in the earth that they saw; yellow, buff, brown, gray, green and red. They added this color to their sculptures and realized the color helped make them look more realistic. This made the Cavemen think the life-like figures had magical powers.

They started using the colors to tell stories on their walls and just like today, one idea lead to another and they started to experiment with fruits and plants. They added water to the colors and started to apply these new colors to their walls and articles. Paint was born.

When man discovered fire, they started cooking the meat of the animals they killed. The cooked meat produced fat. This dripping fat gave the soil a different look. Some observant Caveman tried replacing the water they used in the paint with the fat from the dripping meat. The fat acted as a binder and the paint did not deteriorate as quickly. It adhered to surfaces better. As time went on, other Cavemen experimented with other binders, such as egg-whites, linseed oil, glue, wax, gum Arabic and casein. Some things worked well and helped the paint stick to surfaces and increase the amount of time it held up, others were a disappointment and were unreliable. We are still searching today for better permanent colors.
